An important new capability in the fight against bark beetles

Hercon´s DISRUPT MICRO-FLAKE® and DISRUPT BIO-FLAKE® Bark Beetle Anti-Aggregant products provide a very important capability in the fight against bark beetles, namely the ability to protect high value trees by allowing rapid and effective aerial treatment of forests or large tree stands not possible with the hand-applied "pouch" or "bubble-cap" products. The products can also be applied to small to mid-size tree stands or to individual trees using a variety of ground application methods at faster rates than possible with products requiring hand-stapling or nailing.

Proven Efficacy and Results

The products have been field tested by the US Forest Service and found to provide significant protection for trees and tree stands against bark beetle attack.

The following quotes from a peer–reviewed published research article speak to the efficacy of the DISRUPT MICRO–FLAKE® VBN Bark Beetle Anti–Aggregant Flakes:

"…a significantly smaller proportion of trees was attacked in stands treated with aerially applied verbenone–releasing flakes than in control stands, with a threefold reduction in attack rate…"1

"The demonstrated efficacy of verbenone–releasing flakes for D. ponderosae control offers the hope of rapid, area–wide treatment in the face of these explosive and widespread bark beetle outbreaks."1

The following quotes from a peer–reviewed published research article speak to the efficacy of the DISRUPT MICRO–FLAKE® MCH Bark Beetle Anti–Aggregant Flakes:

"The attack rate in untreated stands was nearly 10 times that of treated plots…"2

"The only significant difference between treated and control plots was the post–treatment mean attack rate, which was 6.23 trees/ha for controls, and 0.30 trees/ha for treated plots (P<0.0001)…"2

"We found a significant, positive treatment effect in terms of tree protection, with fewer attacked trees after treatment in treated plots than in control plots (63 vs. 3 trees)…"2

"The reduction in attack rate achieved by reducing beetle attraction into treated stands…was considerable, with attack rates in treated stands close to zero…"2

"The efficacy of MCH–releasing flakes for D. pseudotsugae control offers the possibility of a truly rapid, area–wide response to bark beetle outbreaks."2

Over a Decade of Success and Safety

DISRUPT MICRO-FLAKE® and DISRUPT BIO-FLAKE® Bark Beetle Anti–Aggregant products are based on Hercon´s proprietary pheromone controlled–release technology proven safe and effective in over 15 years of use in the US Forest Service´s Gypsy Moth Slow–the–Spread Program with aerial applications to 300,000 – 600,000 acres of eastern forests annually.

Three products

DISRUPT MICRO-FLAKE® VBN Bark Beetle Anti–Aggregant Flakes (US EPA Product Registration No. 8730–68) – Contains the active ingredient, verbenone, effective as an anti–aggregation pheromone against mountain pine beetle (MPB) and certain other species by preventing attack and build–up up of damaging population levels in susceptible trees and tree stands.

DISRUPT BIO–FLAKE® VBN Bark Beetle Anti–Aggregant Flakes (US EPA Product Registration No. 8730–77) – Contains the active ingredient, verbenone, effective as an anti–aggregation pheromone against mountain pine beetle (MPB) and certain other species by preventing attack and build–up up of damaging population levels in susceptible trees and tree stands. The BIO–FLAKE formulation is made of a biodegradable product that will naturally and rapidly degrade in the environment once the active ingredient is gone.

DISRUPT MICRO–FLAKE® MCH Bark Beetle Anti–Aggregant Flakes (US EPA Product Registration No. 8730–72) – Contains the active ingredient, methyl cyclohexenone, effective as an anti–aggregation pheromone against Douglas–fir beetle (DFB) and certain other species.

DISRUPT® MICRO–FLAKE Light Brown Apple Moth

Hercon Disrupt Micro–Flake LBAM is an environmentally compatible insect pheromone product used in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs as an insect mating disruptant specifically to suppress populations of the new invasive pest species, Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM), Epiphyaspostvittana.

The pheromone contained in the product is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring pheromone "perfume" produced by female LBAM moths to create distinctive scent trails attractive to male LBAM moths. The purpose of these scent trails is to function as a "sex attractant" to aid male moths in locating female moths for mating. Blanketing an area infested with LBAM with synthetic LBAM pheromone can mask these naturally produced scent trails. The pheromone plume produced by the female moth is then no longer distinct enough for the male moth to follow to the female, so the occurrence of successful mating and the size of subsequent LBAM populations are reduced. This environmentally friendly method of controlling pest insect populations is called "mating disruption."
